Obama Magnet Elementary Students Compete in State Spelling Bee!
April 1, 2021
L-R: Alyson Henson (5th Grader) and Kaleigh Gates (5th Grader)
Obama Magnet 5th graders Alyson Henson and Kaleigh Gates recently competed in the Mississippi State Spelling Bee, which is sponsored locally by the Mississippi Association of Educators (MAE). Alyson was Obama Magnet’s School Champion and Kaleigh was School Runner-Up. Both were deemed eligible to compete at the state competition, which was comprised of 31 top spellers from across the state of Mississippi. This year’s state competition was virtual, utilizing an online testing platform developed by Scripps—which sponsors the National Spelling Bee, each year. The students prepared for the competition utilizing online materials available through Scripps. The Obama Magnet School Spelling Bee, which took place earlier this year, was virtual, as well. “We did not want the pandemic to stop students from having the opportunity to participate in a school spelling bee, so we utilized the Scripps online testing platform at the school level,” said David Schommer, Spelling Bee Coordinator at the school. “We are so proud of our students taking on this difficult challenge. As an International Baccalaureate School, we strive to develop in our students' specific character attributes including being principled, knowledgeable, and risk-takers. To participate at this high level of competition takes preparation and courage,” said Mr. John Johnson, Ed.S., Principal For their participation in the Mississippi State Spelling Bee, Alyson and Kaleigh will receive a special medallion, certificate, and gift card, made available through local sponsors. The winner of this year’s Mississippi Spelling Bee was Eesh Majithia. Eesh is a two-time winner from St. Andrew’s Episcopal School and this summer he will represent Mississippi at the Scripps National Spelling Bee. This year’s runner-up was Elthahir Zein. Elthahir is a 7th grader at Northwest Rankin Middle School.
