2023 Michael D. Johnson Memorial Foundation Scholarship

The Michael D. Johnson Memorial Foundation is accepting applications for its annual scholarship program for senior athletes. The MDJ Athletic Scholarship awards a graduating JPS senior with up to a $1,500 annual scholarship for their college education. Additionally, the foundation provides book scholarships of up to $250 for the runners-up.

Belated congratulations go to the 2022 winners. Frances Lewis at Forest Hill High School, won the grand scholarship. The $250 MDJ book scholarships went to Ravion Lightfoot at Murrah High, and Jamea Smith of Lanier High School.

The Athletic Scholarship is awarded on a competitive basis to graduating senior athletes from JPS high schools. Candidates must have a 2.5 or higher GPA, demonstrate community involvement, and complete an essay as part of the application process. The Foundation established this program, specifically for athletes, in memory of Michael D. Johnson. Johnson was a Murrah basketball and baseball player whose promising life was tragically ended by a drunk driver a short time after his high school graduation in 2005.

The application deadline is Saturday, April 1, 2023. School athletic directors, head coaches, teachers, or counselors must submit applications to the Foundation by the deadline. Committee members will select the scholarship winners before the annual Michael D. Johnson Memorial Foundation Walk.
