Congratulations to our Administrators of the Month for February! These 4 individuals are dedicated leaders who strive for excellence in all they do, and we appreciate their service to the JPS community, especially their commitment to our scholars. Our February Administrators of the Month are:
Dr. Eric Cook, Career Development Center
Dr. Eric Cook is the principal of the Career Development Center. He previously served as an assistant principal at the Jackson Public Schools Career Development Center. The areas he supported included administration and supervision of personnel, academic policy, school testing, and district-wide implementation of Career and Technical Education standards. He has been an assistant principal and principal at the elementary and high school levels in JPS for the past 16 years. His career began at the Mississippi School for the Deaf where he taught high school mathematics for eight years. He is excited that he will continue to lead the team at the CDC for the 2020-2021 school year as the Principal and Director of Career and Technical Education.
Dr. Cook holds Bachelor of Science and Master of Science in Education degrees in Special Education and a Doctor of Philosophy degree in Educational Administration, all from Jackson State University.
LaShunna McInnis, Powell Middle
LaShunna McInnis is principal of Powell Middle School and a 27-year veteran educator who has served the Jackson Public School District for over 20 consecutive years.
Degrees and Certifications:
Education: Bachelor of Arts in History, Jackson State University; Master of Education Administration, Grand Canyon University; pursuing Doctor of Education in Organizational Leadership with an emphasis on K-12 Instruction, Grand Canyon University
Linda Murray – Galloway Elementary, Division l
Linda Murray is in her second year as leader of Galloway Elementary School. She previously served as the principal of Barr Elementary School for more than five years. She was named the JPS Administrator of the Year in 2019 for her transformative leadership that reshaped the culture of the school and propelled its performance rating of a B for 3 consecutive years. Under her leadership, the school was also recognized as a Model PBIS (Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports) School by REACH Mississippi and for School Success by the Mississippi Secretary of State's Office. Over the course of Murray's 24-year career, she has served in Jackson Public Schools as a teacher's assistant, teacher, literacy coach, instructional specialist, and building administrator.
Mrs. Murray holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Education from Jackson State University and Master of Education and Education Specialist degrees in Educational Leadership from Mississippi College. She is in the dissertation phase of a doctoral degree at Mississippi College.
Dr. Lynn Horton – Timberlawn Elementary, Division ll
Dr. Lynn Horton is the lead instructional leader at Timberlawn Elementary School. This year marks the fourth year as a Timberlawn Bulldog. She has given 30 years of service in education to the students at Jackson Public School District, in different capacities. Her educational experiences have afforded her the opportunity to collaborate with a diverse group of people to meet the common goal of increasing student achievement and overall well-being. Dr. Horton’s educational philosophy is based on her uncompromising belief that all students can learn, given a positive learning environment, strong and knowledgeable leadership, a committed and focused educational team, an encouraging community, and a supportive family.
Throughout the years, this phenomenal leader has cultivated an environment of unity, fairness, hard work, and respect amongst her school family. Dr. Horton has a love for children and often encourages her staff and students to be good or be good at it. Each day, Dr. Horton leads her staff and motivates the school family to teach and learn with purpose, passion, and perseverance. She believes that we will achieve our mission by working together to ensure that every Timberlawn Bulldog excels academically, socially, and emotionally.
