JPS Announces District-Based After-School Programs at 26 Sites
August 18, 2021
After-School programming will open for JPS scholars Tuesday, September 14, and will run Tuesday through Thursday each week. All programs will operate by the Student Code of Conduct and Handbook. |
At its regular meeting held Tuesday, August 17, the Board of Trustees of Jackson Public Schools approved the District's plans for implementing after-school programming to meet the needs of students in grades K-12 and their families. Under the leadership of the Office of Innovative Strategy, all schools will have equitable access to high-quality, free after-school programs for scholars. Starting in September, District-based after-school programs will be open at 26 sites to meet the needs of scholars at all grade levels. Offerings include STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts & Math) enrichment, intramural sports, and ACT Prep, as well as tutoring in reading and math.
"I'm excited to launch these after-school experiences," said Dr. Errick L. Greene, Superintendent. "We made a commitment to JPS scholars and families that we would provide equitable access to high-quality out-of-school experience in our strategic plan, and today we're proud to deliver on that promise. These robust and engaging programs will further the important work that we're doing to transform teaching and learning in the classroom. I hope that our families will take advantage of these amazing opportunities."
The Office of Innovative Strategy seeks to provide every JPS scholar with equitable access to an after-school option in a safe, nurturing, and culturally affirming space through this initiative.
Bus transportation and meals will be provided for all participating JPS scholars. JPS transportation will transport participating scholars from school to the aftercare site and home. However, parents have the option of picking up their children. The Office of Child Nutrition in JPS will provide snacks and dinner for program participants. The hours of the District-based after-school program are as follows: Elementary – 2:45-5:45 p.m.; Middle – 3:30-6:00 p.m.; and High – 4:15-6:15 p.m. The program will run Tuesday through Thursday each week. District-Based programs will require face coverings for all scholars and follow the Student Code of Conduct and Handbook guidelines.
"The new enrichment classes offered by JPS are groundbreaking and innovative," said Felicia Sandifer, an Obama Magnet parent. "As a parent of a third-grader who attends Barack Obama Magnet School, I am thankful and enthusiastic about the new after-school enrichment program. This opportunity will aid my child in her educational journey."
How to Apply
The application process is as follows:
- The District-Based After-School Registration Form will be available online and at schools by Wednesday, August 18.
- Families should return completed applications to their child's home school by Monday, August 30.
- Schools will notify parents of their enrollment status by Monday, September 6.
- Programs will begin the following week, on Tuesday, September 14.
Seating is limited, so schools will fill slots on a first-come, first-served basis. Families who don't get a placement initially will be added to a waiting list. The District will also provide a list of alternative programs available across the city.
After-School Providers
The District has engaged nine local providers to develop content and programs that align with and support schools' instructional programs and accelerate learning. One of these partners, The Mississippi MS Children's Museum, will serve elementary students in the Murrah Feeder Pattern by providing literacy, STEAM activities, homework assistance, and other pandemic-specific social supports. Below is a complete list with program descriptions for the organizations that will implement high-quality programming for JPS scholars in a range of areas from foreign languages to health and fitness, the arts, and academic enrichment.
