JPS Receives National Award for Excellence in Public Health

September 9, 2024

Every year, the American Public Health Association (APHA) honors excellence in public health leadership and innovation, from state and local health officials to those speaking up for public health from the halls of Congress.

Jackson Public Schools will receive the 2024 APHA Presidential Citation for improving education outcomes through community partnerships. This is in part due to the school district’s partnership with several local organizations such as the Boys and Girls Club of Jackson and the Jackson Hinds Comprehensive Health Center to provide social services and health care for school families that promote healthy habits, such as regular exercise and healthy eating.

“I'm thrilled to share this recognition from the American Public Health Association with long-standing and trusted partners in promoting positive health outcomes for our scholars and their families,” said Superintendent Dr. Errick L. Greene.  “When scholars' basic needs are met, they're far more likely to succeed in school. By coordinating the physical health, mental health, and social services in our schools, we make those resources more accessible and just in time for our scholars. Together, we are truly changing lives. We're forever grateful for our amazing partners, and for this national recognition.”

“We’re excited to present this prestigious award to those working tirelessly to improve public health across the country and around the globe. Their innovation, leadership and advocacy demonstrate a deep commitment to public health and health equity,” said Georges C. Benjamin, MD, executive director of APHA.

This year’s awards will be presented Monday, October 28 at 12:30 p.m. during APHA’s 2024 Annual Meeting and Expo, which officially kicks off October 27 in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
