2024 JPS JROTC Cadet Leadership Challenge

June 13, 2024 - Instead of playing video games or watching movies in the cool of their homes, eight scholars from each high school endured a grueling, outdoor Jackson Public School JROTC camp that tested their endurance.

The JROTC Cadet Leadership Challenge (JCLC) is a Brigade-level event for Army JROTC Cadets that takes place across the world.

JCLCs are typically held at Boy Scout camps or military installations, but have recently begun incorporating science, technology, engineering and math as part of their activities.

Tasks at the JPS JCLC included rappelling from a 60-foot tower, land navigation, a leadership reaction course, medical litter course, canoeing and physical fitness training, just to name a few.

Wingfield High School Junior, John'Tiyeah Harden said the camp depleted his energy.

"By the third day, I was mentally exhausted and eager to return home. I found it unbearable to endure the high temperatures and shouting of the instructors," said Harden. "Following my conversation with LTC Derrick Davis, he emphasized the need for resilience and the ability to adjust to adversity, given that we only had two days remaining at camp. JCLC will compel you to participate in events, make adjustments, and believe in yourself."

LTC Derrick Davis, US Army Retired LTC Derrick Davis of Wingfield High School was amazed by the scholars' resilience.

"I observed numerous cadets conveying apprehension regarding the repel tower and the canoeing event. It was intriguing that both males and females were courageous and intelligent enough to acknowledge their anxiety," said Davis. "It was remarkable that the vast majority of participants overcame their anxiety and had a successful and enjoyable JCLC."
Each JPS high school (Murrah, Jim Hill, Callaway, Provine, Wingfield, Lanier and Forest Hill) sent eight cadets, four males and four females plus 10 JROTC instructors to attend this year's program.
