JPS Honors School Counselor of the Year, Celebrates National School Counseling Week

National School Counseling Week

February 26, 2025 - In a celebration of dedication, compassion, and the power of guidance, Jackson Public Schools (JPS) honored its 75 remarkable school counselors during the 2025 Counselor of the Year Annual Awards on Friday, February 7, 2025. The event, held in honor of National School Counseling Week (NSCW), highlighted the impact these professionals have on shaping the lives of scholars across the district.

Under the theme “Helping Students Thrive”, the celebration was not just about recognizing titles or accolades—it was about storytelling, inspiration, and the countless quiet victories that counselors encounter inside schools every day.

At the heart of the celebration stood Monica G. Dickerson, named the 2025 School Counselor of the Year. Monica, a devoted Forest Hill High School counselor, is known for her unwavering commitment to her scholars, colleagues, and community. “Monica is the kind of counselor who doesn’t just guide scholars; she walks the path with them,” shared Dr. LeSian C. Davis, JPS Director of Counseling. “Her compassion, perseverance, and dedication make her an invaluable advocate for those she serves.”

Balancing her professional life with her role as a wife and mother, Monica embodies what it means to lead with both head and heart. Her ability to navigate the challenges of counseling while fostering deep, meaningful connections with her scholars is what truly sets her apart. She is committed to her scholars at school during the day and even supports them in the evening at afterschool-related events.

“This event is more than just a ceremony; it’s a reflection of the heartbeat of JPS,” said Dr. Davis. “Every one of our counselors plays a critical role in shaping futures and fostering resilience in our scholars.”

The evening featured inspirational words from district leaders, team-building activities, and a vibrant performance by the Jackson State University African Drum and Dance Ensemble. Dr. Jennifer K. Young Wallace, JSU Associate Professor of Educational Leadership at Jackson State University, used a tree-branch metaphor to inspire counselors to be the strong, supportive extensions that scholars and educators need.

JPS extends its deepest gratitude to its counselors—the champions who show up every day with the singular goal of helping scholars not just succeed, but truly thrive.
