The Jackson Public Schools Morrison Adult Education Center honored 17 GED graduates during a commencement ceremony and reception held Wednesday, May 25, 2016, at Murrah High School. Speakers included Isaac Norwood, Director of the Adult Education Center and Dr. Calvin Lockett, Executive Director of Special Projects. Joining other platform guests in presenting certificates to graduates were JPS Deputy Superintendent Wilbur Walters and Hinds County Sheriff Victor Mason.
Dr. Lockett told graduates that by obtaining their GED certificates they have laid the foundation for a positive future.
"Step out, keep the faith," said Dr. Lockett. "Faith doesn't make it easy, but faith makes it possible."
The Morrison Adult Education GED program helps students develop the skills required to pass the General Education Development Exam. The free Adult Basic Education classes offered at the Morrison center help students prepare for the exam. Subjects taught as part of this program include language arts, writing, reading, social studies, science, and mathematics. Revitalized in 2014, the GED program ensures graduates are well-prepared for college and career advancement.
"This has been 20 years in the making, and I was discouraged by the math, but I made it," said graduate Willie Herring, who plans to go on to Kentucky State University.
