Jackson Public Schools Names Interim Police Chief
JPS Interim Police Chief Corliss Harris |
January 9, 2024 – Jackson Public Schools has appointed Assistant Chief Corliss Harris as the interim chief of the district's police department. Harris is committed to ensuring the safety of all scholars and employees while fostering strong, healthy relationships within the community.
A graduate of Jackson State University and an eight-year veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps, Harris brings over 20 years of extensive law enforcement experience. His career includes serving as a Narcotics Detective and instructor at the Jackson Police Department's Law Enforcement Training Academy, working in the Hinds County Sheriff's Department Warrants Division, acting as Assistant Commander of SWAT, and serving as Interim Chief of Police for the Jackson Municipal Airport Authority Police Department.
Harris began his journey with Jackson Public Schools in 2018 as a Patrol Officer, rising through the ranks to Sergeant and now Interim Chief. His leadership has been instrumental in rebranding the department, with a strong focus on prioritizing structure and advanced training.
Under his guidance, the department has introduced several new law enforcement training programs, including initiatives for school resource officers, investigations, and patrol operations. These programs ensure that both sworn police officers and non-sworn school safety officers receive the most current and effective training available.
With 30 years of experience in law enforcement and the military, Harris could choose to retire but continue to serve because of his passion for the work.
"I love what I do. I love the work and the people, and it's an honor for that to be noticed," said Harris. "I truly enjoy helping our team believe in themselves and their abilities, with the confidence of knowing they have all they need to be successful."
