JPS Superintendent Addresses Academic Gains and Isolated Testing Concerns
August 17, 2023
We are thrilled to share some truly exciting news. Our dedication to excellence in education is evident in our recent test scores and academic achievements. Our scholars' hard work, combined with the relentless efforts of our teachers, staff, parents, and the entire community, have led to exceptional results that demonstrate our commitment to academic success.
Our students have shown remarkable growth in their academic performance. Across all grade levels, we have witnessed a significant growth in proficiency levels in subjects ranging from Algebra 1, Biology 1, English II, U.S. History, English Language Learner (ELA), Math, and Science. These results are a testament to the diligence and determination of our students to excel.
This year, our most significant gains were in the fields of science and mathematics. In 2023, 43.8% of our scholars achieved proficiency in science—an 11% surge from 2022 and 25% increase from 2021. Comparably, in the area of mathematics, we observed a 9% increase in proficiency from 2022, which translates to an exciting 22.6% rise from 2021. Between 2022 and 2023, proficiency gains of 6% for English language arts and 7% for history were also achieved.
It's not just about test scores. Our scholars' holistic growth is a priority. Their increasing curiosity, creativity, and enthusiasm for learning are indicators of a well-rounded education that will serve them well in their future endeavors.
“Our educators have gone above and beyond to create a supportive and engaging learning environment,” said Superintendent Dr. Errick L. Greene. “Their innovative teaching methods, personalized attention, and dedication to fostering critical thinking have undoubtedly played a pivotal role in driving these outstanding results. Let us commend our teachers for their unwavering commitment to guiding our students towards success.”
This achievement is not solely attributed to the efforts within our school walls. It is the result of a united community, including parents, guardians, volunteers, and local businesses, that have continually supported our educational endeavors. Your encouragement, involvement, and belief in our students have greatly contributed to their achievements.
We understand the importance of maintaining the integrity of our education system and ensuring a fair and equitable environment for all students. We wanted to address recent concerns that have come to our attention regarding potential testing irregularities within our school district. "Upon learning of testing irregularities associated with the 2022/2023 Mississippi Academic Assessment Program, the Jackson Public Schools administration acted swiftly to launch a comprehensive investigation,” said Board of Trustees President Dr. Ed Sivak. “The Board of Trustees was quickly informed of the matter, and is united in its support for Superintendent Dr. Errick L. Greene and has full confidence in the process he has outlined to surface findings in an equitable, transparent, and timely manner. As one of the largest districts in the state, we're hopeful that the overall story of Jackson Public Schools remains one of hard work, resilience and increasingly higher performance of our students. We thank all of our teachers, principals, support staff, scholars and families for their continued commitment to excellence."
Maintaining the highest standards of academic integrity is one of our top priorities. Any allegations of testing irregularities or misconduct are taken very seriously, and we are committed to thoroughly investigating any such claims. Our goal is to ensure that every scholar has the opportunity to demonstrate their knowledge and skills under fair and consistent conditions. We want to assure you that we are actively looking into these concerns. This is not a districtwide issue. This is a very isolated incident. We will follow the investigation where it leads and take all appropriate actions including termination and reporting to the Mississippi Department of Education Office of Educator Misconduct. Our investigation process is designed to be thorough and impartial, and we will involve all necessary parties to ensure transparency and accountability. While we understand that speculation and concern can arise during such situations, we kindly ask for your patience as we work to gather all the facts and reach a fair resolution. We will keep our families and the community updated on the progress and results of the investigation.
Thank you for your support and understanding of our commitment to uphold the values of our school district. We are One District with One Direction, Marching Towards Excellence.
