JPS Accountability Improves to a C Rating

September 29, 2022

The Jackson Public School District has improved to a "C" rating based on the state's A-F accountability system that evaluates how schools and districts performed in the 2021-2022 school year.

The State Board of Education approved the results during its September 29 board meeting. Accountability grades are based on the results of the Mississippi Academic Assessment Program (MAAP) for English Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, and U.S. History. MAAP assessments were administered to students in grades 3 through 8 and in high school during the 2021-2022 school year.

Schools and districts are graded on an “A” through “F” scale. To reach a “C”, school districts must have a 536-scale score. JPS earned a 569 which is only 33 points away from being a “B” school district.  All JPS high schools improved at least one letter rating, and several schools increased two or more letter grades.

Obama Elementary School is ranked as the top elementary school in the state of Mississippi. The following additional schools are ranked in the top 20:

  • Lester Elementary
  • McWillie Elementary
  • Wells APAC Elementary

“We achieved this performance level by strategically focusing our work, by mobilizing talented educators to support scholars in and out of classrooms, and by holding ourselves accountable for delivering excellence,” said Superintendent Dr. Errick L. Greene.

The District’s success can be attributed to improved performance in key areas, such as:

  • The highest graduation rate in recent history – 84.6%;
  • Increased performance in English/Language Arts and math meeting pre-pandemic levels; effectively regaining ground that was lost during the pandemic;
  • The highest growth on state-administered assessments in District history.

“I'm so proud of Jackson Public Schools: of our scholars, our educators, our leaders, our support staff, and our parents and families,” said Deputy Superintendent Dr. Michael Cormack, Jr.   “We've overcome so much in the past few years (pandemic, floods, ice storms, senseless violence, and our ongoing water crisis), yet we've overcome them.”

When scores were last given prior to the pandemic and during for the 2020- 2021 and 2018- 2019 school years, JPS was rated a “D” rated district with a 504 score. JPS increased from being an “F” District in the year prior.

The District avoided a state takeover in 2017 after receiving an F state accountability rating for two consecutive years. At that time, Governor Phil Bryant in collaboration with Mayor Chokwe Antar Lumumba and the W.K. Kellogg Foundation established the Better Together Commission to create a plan that ensured the academic success of all JPS students. Additionally, an entire new school board was appointed by Mayor Lumumba.

Dr. Errick L. Greene was appointed superintendent of Jackson Public Schools in October 2018. Under his tenure, JPS developed a five-year strategic plan, Excellence for All, restructured the administrative leadership to better support schools, and reduced numerous state standard violations.

As JPS strives to improve to a B-rated school district, it will take the support of our scholars, families, and the community to achieve the next level of success.

Jackson Public Schools owes it to its scholars and to its team to continue to March Toward Excellence, as One District, with One Direction.
