Jim Hill Scholar-Athlete Kimona Haynes Headed to LeMoyne Owen College on Track Scholarship
July 1, 2022
Jim Hill High Scholar-Athlete Kimona Haynes signed a track scholarship with LeMoyne Owen College amongst her family and coaches during a brief ceremony on Friday, June 24. In 2021, Kimona finished 3rd at the 2021 5A MHSAA track meet in the 400-meter dash. This year, Kimona beat her best recorded time by 4 seconds (58.62) to become the 5A state champion in the 400-meter dash.
As a freshman, Kimona was considered a natural leader. She led the team with or without the title of team captain, especially through the pandemic. She was the first at practice and always kept the team on task. Kimona would share her knowledge of the sport with her teammates and push them to be the best version of themselves. “Kimona is one of the most self-disciplined athletes I have ever coached,” said Coach Tamika Harris. “I truly believe that if nobody showed up, Kimona would practice by herself. She trained during holiday breaks and, when possible, would find a track to use for workouts when we were out of school. That kind of dedication is unmatched.”
Kimona will be missed for her genuine, fun, and loving nature. While she attacks the track with tenacity, off the track, she is kind-hearted and a joy to be around. Her passion and love for the sport make her an amazing teammate, which is a plus for the LeMoyne Owen College Track and Field program.
“Watching her put all of the pieces together this year to achieve her goals and become state champion has been amazing and she is very deserving of this. I am excited to see what the next phase of her athletic career will hold.”
