On Wednesday, October 7, Jackson Public Schools and William Carey University signed a Memorandum of Understanding to establish a new partnership to create the JPS Teacher Certification Program and provide a pathway to standard Mississippi Educator Certification for provisionally licensed district employees through the university's Alternate Route program.

Participating in the ceremonial signing event were Dr. Ben Burnett, Executive Vice President and Dean of Education of William Carey University, and Dr. Errick L. Greene, Superintendent of Jackson Public Schools.

"Our mission is to help solve the teacher shortage in the state of Mississippi," said Dr. Burnett. "We want to help the public schools across the state of Mississippi, not just fill their openings, but research shows in the age of accountability that achievement is only going to go up with an effective teacher in the classroom. So, we don't just want to fill the classrooms. We want to help fill the classrooms with effective teachers."

"We know that the days are long gone that you simply put a posting out there and name that you need a teacher in the classroom, we've got to be much more intentional about it," said Dr. Greene. "We're excited that we can do that with our new partners William Carey University."

This collaboration between Jackson Public Schools and William Carey University will assist the District in providing support to teachers seeking a five-year license by paying for one or more classes to assist them in the certification process. Teachers who receive this assistance will agree to three years of service with JPS.
