Jackson Public Schools is moving forward with plans for an all-virtual instructional model for the fall semester of the 2020-2021 school year. The full Instructional Plan has been released detailing three major components of providing successful online learning environments: Content Delivery, Digital Resources, and Instructional Support.
Instructional content will be delivered to scholars via online Learning Management Systems–Google Classroom for elementary scholars and Canvas for middle and high school scholars. Learning Management Systems make it possible for teachers to centralize learning resources and create lessons as well as communicate with parents. The online tools teachers and students use regularly can be easily accessed within the system. Additionally, parents can receive notifications about assignments and grades from either platform.
Given the online instructional delivery model, we must adopt for the first semester of school, it is incumbent on the District to work with parents in ensuring computer access connectivity is available for students to engage with their learning materials. Devices will be distributed to families based on parent feedback obtained when they register for school. For families with no internet access or a device at home, we will provide optional resources, such as printed materials, videos, and daily support from a dedicated team of educators at their child's home school.
With that said, parents must complete registration. We are asking that parents complete registration as soon as possible. Parents and legal guardians of returning students can register online through their ActiveParent accounts. Families whose residence has not changed since last year, are not required to show proofs of residency this year. However, if proofs of residency are required, they can be uploaded as part of the online registration process.
Since parents will be essential in their child's virtual learning program, they will receive support and strategies for assisting with expectations at home. We do not expect parents to become their child's teacher but that they will be partners in ensuring the success of their child. With that end in mind, we invite families to join our parent engagement sessions entitled What Parents Need to Know About Virtual Learning in JPS. The sessions will be delivered online via Zoom conference from August 5-7 at 11 a.m.-12:30 p.m. or 5:30-7 p.m. There is no pre-registration. Parents can simply join the session that is convenient for their schedules.
