JPS Top Speller Takes 2nd Place in Hinds County Spelling Bee

Amerie Thomas, a fifth-grader at Barack Obama Magnet School was named runner up in the 2020 Hinds County Spelling Bee. Amerie has attended Obama Magnet since kindergarten. She is an active member of the school community, participating in STEM Club, Pep Squad, and Junior Beta Honor Society, and serving as a school ambassador. Amerie is an avid reader and enjoys learning Spanish. She is the daughter of Alex Thomas and Amanda Thomas, executive director of Climate and Wellness.
