The City of Jackson will begin emergency repair work on a concrete pipe off Forest Avenue today, Friday, March 10, 2017, at 3 p.m. which will cause a water shortage and outage affecting approximately 40,000 residents, several schools and businesses. The repair work is expected to be completed Sunday, March 12. A boil water notice will immediately follow the repair until the Mississippi State Department of Health notifies the City that water samples are clear.

Jackson Public Schools will dismiss at normal times on Friday, March 10. Many District schools and offices will experience low or no water pressure after 3 p.m. As a result, there will be no after-school activities from March 10–13. Drinking water will be made available to high schools that do not dismiss until 3:30 p.m.

Central Office and Enochs building employees will be dismissed today at 4 p.m.

The City of Jackson encourages residents to begin taking steps to prepare for the water outage by filling empty containers with tap water and purchasing bottled water. Residents can also fill their tubs with water for household needs. It is probably advantageous to stock up on bottled water and make provisions for storing water in containers as well.

The City of Jackson has a limited supply of bottled water for distribution, one case per household. The water will be distributed at the following locations:

  • Precinct 1, 810 Cooper Road
  • Precinct 2, located at Metrocenter Mall,
  • Mississippi Veterans Memorial Stadium, 2531 North State Street, the West Street entrance.

The water will be distributed on Friday, March 10, from 12 p.m. until 6 p.m. and on Saturday, beginning at 8 a.m. as long as supplies last.

The Department of Human and Cultural Services will provide a case of water to disabled and senior adults. For more information, Jackson residents may call (601) 960-0335.

Residents are encouraged to sign up for Code Red, the City's emergency alert system by visiting www.jacksonms.gov and clicking the Code Red icon. The system will be used to notify customers about the water outage and the subsequent boil water notices.
