strive for less than 5 absences School attendance is very important to ensure students do not miss vital classroom instruction time. When students improve their attendance rates, they improve their academic prospects. We are asking everyone to strive for less than five absences during the entire school year.

Mississippi law requires students to be in attendance 63 percent of the school day in order to be counted as present. This means, if students are not at school for 63 percent of the school day they will be counted as absent, and they will not be counted toward the District's Average Daily Attendance.

Here's where JPS parents can help us meet attendance goals. Try to make sure students are absent no more than five days during the school year. You can mitigate an absence by deferring early dismissals of students until after 2 p.m. for appointments and other important activities.

superintendents hotline 6019602781 The Superintendent's Hotline will be in operation again this year to answer any questions or concerns on the first two days of school, August 9 and 10. Hotline operators will be answering calls from 7 a.m.-5 p.m. Call (601) 960-2781 to get help with everything from registration to transportation.

Student Enrollment

Registration for Jackson Public Schools is an online process, which makes getting a student registered for school easier on parents.

Parents/guardians must make an initial visit to the school in their attendance zone to begin the online registration process.

Schools are open from 8 a.m.-3 p.m. Monday through Friday with hours extended until 6 p.m. on Thursdays. Schools will be closed from 11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. each day for lunch.

School Bus Transportation

JPS school buses provide transportation to students' schools and home addresses only. This includes round-trip transportation for students attending special program schools, such as the Academic and Performing Arts Complex, the three International Baccalaureate schools, and McWillie Montessori school.

Bus pick-up schedules will be mailed to parents before the first day of school. Parents who do not receive their student's bus schedule, should contact the appropriate JPS transportation center as indicated below.

Breakfast and Lunch

JPS students will receive FREE breakfast and lunch meals again in 2016-2017. JPS will take part in the Community Eligibility Program (CEP). The program provides an alternative approach for offering school meals to local educational agencies and schools in low income areas, instead of collecting individual applications for free and reduced price meals. The CEP allows schools that serve low-income children to offer free, nutritious school meals to all students through the National School Lunch and School Breakfast Programs.
