Over 300 JPS Elementary Scholars Dined, Danced in Formal Attire at Inaugural Etiquette Celebration
April 30, 2024 - Young boys and girls in formal wear, complete with neckties and pearl necklaces, enjoyed the waltz after a 5-course meal inside Jackson’s Ice House Venue on Tuesday, April 23, 2024. The inaugural Simply Charming Etiquette Dinner celebrated gifted 2nd - 5th graders who mastered a 9-week etiquette and social skills training.
Guided by the Mississippi Department of Education, the comprehensive program covered meeting and introduction protocols, table etiquette, proper poise, speaking confidently, partner dancing, and etiquette for every day and formal occasions. According to the National Education Association, “we owe it to our kids” to teach them social skills and etiquette to allow them to succeed.
JPS scholars enrolled in the ALPHA Gifted Education Program, formerly Open Doors Education Program, completed the coaching. They showed off their new skills before parents, district leaders, and esteemed guests of honor thanks to a $17,500 grant from the Junior League of Jackson.
ALPHA Gifted Education Program Manager, Shanel Kidd, Ed.S, says the event is a 4-year-old dream come true. “I saw it - just didn’t know how it would happen,” said Kidd. “Our society has forgotten so many fundamentals, and we want to put those back in place.”
