JPS Nurses Meet Challenges Arising from Pandemic Response
May 29, 2020
JPS nurses deployed to the Mississippi Veterans Memorial Stadium for a full week to screen graduating seniors participating in commencement activities. |
Choices for Children assisted the JPS nurses during commencement week by providing medical equipment and personnel to help with temperature checks. |
The first stop for JPS Class of 2020 graduates during commencement week was the nurse's station for temperature checks. Of course, what caring adult could resist fixing a collar, straightening a sash or untangling a twisted array of medals and cords? In matters big and small, our nurses have responded to the call to bring much-needed calm and assurance of safety to our scholars.
"During this pandemic, nurses continue to keep the school community abreast of CDC regulations and guidelines, and they work hard to ensure that staff is in compliance," said Amanda Thomas, Executive Director of Climate and Wellness.
As a component of the Office of Climate and Wellness, the District's five-member nursing corps would be otherwise engaged in the operation of school-based health clinics. However, in the weeks since schools were closed due to state and local authorities' response to COVID-19, their duties have adapted to meet new conditions.
Before screening the more than 1,500 graduating seniors and the adults they would come in contact with during a week of commencement activities, the District's nurses administered the same checks during our food distribution program. From March through May, the nurses provided temperature checks and surveilled for the presence of coronavirus-related symptoms in our Child Nutrition, Campus Enforcement, and Facilities staffs.
