The Mississippi Black Women's Roundtable invited JPS high school students to compete in its Voter Registration Challenge. The objective of the challenge was to facilitate students' civic engagement with their community while giving them a chance to win money for their schools' athletic programs. Cash prizes were awarded for first, second, and third place high school teams. The winners are:
- Lanier High School, 1st place ($5,000)
- Callaway High School, 2nd place ($2,500)
- Provine High School, 3rd place ($1,000)
A total of 176 people registered to vote through the challenge held Friday, September 25 and Monday, September 28 from 4-6 p.m.
At the culminating event, the Know Your Power Concert held October 30, Callaway High School was declared the winner of the social media bonus challenge. This added another $2,500 to their winnings and tying them with Lanier with $5,000 for each school.
From their social media profiles, students shared their school's special hashtag to spread the word about voting in the upcoming November election. The winner was determined by having the most likes and shares across their social media platforms using their hashtags.
