Rotary Club of West Jackson Provides Summer Reading Books to Lake Elementary Students
June 7, 2019
Each student at Lake Elementary, from kindergarten through fifth-grade, received their very own copy of their required summer reading book. The Rotary Club of West Jackson presented the donated books before school let out in May.
The Rotary Club of West Jackson delivered summer reading books to rising kindergarten through fifth-grade students at Lake Elementary School. The organization provided a total of 316 books to the school to help students meet their summer reading requirement. This was enough books for each student to receive his or her own copy to read during the summer. West Jackson Rotary members presented the books to students before the end of the school year in May.
Jackson Public Schools requires students to read at least three books during the summer and complete a log for each book they read. The initiative seeks to curb summer learning loss while creating a culture of reading enjoyment. One book title is required and any other books students read is totally their choice. The District only requires students to read three books, but through incentives, it encourages them to read lots more. For more information about the Read On Jackson Summer Reading initiative and to get book lists and logs, visit the Summer Reading section of the District's website.
The Rotary Club of West Jackson is a service organization dedicated to serving the West Jackson Community. The donated summer reading books were purchased with proceeds raised at the West Jackson Rotary Club 5K Community Race held in April.
