JPS Will Continue Districtwide Virtual Learning Friday, January 19, 2024

January 18, 2024

Over the past two days, we have encountered unexpected difficulties from the winter freeze that has affected the physical environment of our schools. Considering these challenges, our top priority has been the safety and well-being of our students and staff. Recognizing the impact on learning, we have made the decision to temporarily shift to virtual learning until we can resolve the issues with the lack of water pressure and heating to ensure a comfortable and conducive atmosphere for in-person classes. Many of our aged schools have boiler systems for heating that require a certain amount of water to operate.

On Friday, January 19, 2024, JPS will resume virtual learning districtwide. Virtual instruction will begin at the following times for each division:
  • Elementary – 7:30 a.m.
  • Middle – 8:00 a.m.
  • High – 8:50 a.m.

Schools will share virtual links with their respective students and families. Nutrition on the Go meals will be available for pickup at every active school site from 12:00 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. Families are encouraged to visit their nearest school for meal pickup.

We express our sincere appreciation for the resilience and adaptability demonstrated by our parents and dedicated teachers, staff and students during this transition. Despite the unexpected shift to virtual learning, our educators have worked tirelessly to maintain the continuity of education, delivering lessons and support remotely. Similarly, our students have shown incredible flexibility in adapting to this temporary change. Thank you for your understanding, cooperation, and for being an essential part of our school community.

Our district is actively working to address the water pressure and heating challenges. We have engaged with JXN Water to expedite the resolution process, and our maintenance teams are working diligently to restore normalcy to our school facilities. According to JXN Water there is a high likelihood that water should be restored over the weekend.

Superintendent Dr. Errick L. Greene will deliver an update regarding these challenges to the Board of Trustees this evening during their regular meeting which begins at 5:30 p.m. Please tune into the live stream on the JPS You Tube page at https://www.youtube.com/jpsitv for the very latest information.
