The Junior League of Jackson (JLJ) recently awarded Jackson Public Schools with $97,958.61 in teacher mini-grants to fund projects in grades K-12 to enhance, enrich, and support the JPS educational curriculum. A total of 18 grants were awarded to 11 schools with amounts ranging from $1,200 to $9,998.87.
Since 1990, the Junior League of Jackson’s Public School Mini-Grants program has provided funding for detailed projects and equipment for applicant teachers. The Community Foundation of Mississippi began partnering with the League in 2004 to include funds generated from the Education Foundation Trust they manage. Together these organizations have provided more than $1.3 million in grant funding for this initiative.
"Our goal is to impact the high school graduation rate and focus heavily on children's literacy," said Katie Browning, JLJ Chapter President. "It was truly heartwarming to see the creativity that our teachers showed in the grant applications."
"To have each year, almost $100,000 awarded to our school district in grants to our teachers for use in their classrooms, this is huge," said Superintendent Dr. Errick L. Greene. "This sustained commitment from the Junior League of Jackson, I can’t say enough about it and what that signals to us and what it signals to this community. I cannot adequately express my appreciation for your hearts and hands of an example of just how you have empowered our schools, teachers and scholars."
The Junior League of Jackson is an organization of women committed to promoting voluntarism, developing the potential of women, and improving communities through the effective action and leadership of trained volunteers. The League supports over 30 community projects and initiatives throughout the Jackson Metro area, including the Public School Mini-Grants program.
