Strings in the Schools

Overview

Students throughout the District have the benefit of free instruction from professional members of the Mississippi Symphony Orchestra through the Strings in the Schools Program. Participation is limited to students in grades K–12. Elementary classes in violin, viola, cello, and bass meet twice weekly, while secondary classes meet daily. As part of the program, the Mississippi Symphony Orchestra offers Kinder Concerts for lower elementary students and Young Peoples Concerts for upper elementary students. In addition, the symphony's small ensembles — the Symphony Woodwind Quintet, the Brass Quintet, and the String Quartet — provide informal concerts to introduce elementary students to the instruments of the orchestra.

For additional information about the Strings in the Schools Program and what schools are served, please view the JPS/MSO Strings in the Schools Annual Report (PDF).
