Jackson Public Schools
February 24, 2025 - On February 19, WAPT made a surprise visit to Lanier Jr. Sr. High School to announce Mikel Houston as the recipient of the prestigious Alyce Clarke Excellence in Education Award. Houston, a beloved science teacher and athletics coach, has made a profound impact on his students through his dedication, passion, and mentorship.
A proud Jackson, Mississippi native and product of the Jackson Public School District (JPS), Houston attended G.N. Smith Elementary School, Brinkley Middle School, and graduated from Lanier High School in 1997. He continued his education at Jackson State University, earning a B.S. in Biology. During his time at Jackson State, Houston was not only an academic achiever but also a talented musician, marching as a trumpet player in Thee Sonic Boom of the South. He later became one of the original J5 Drum Majors, a prestigious honor in the university’s band history.
Houston’s journey in education began as a substitute teacher at Brinkley Middle School. His passion for teaching was evident from day one, leading to a permanent position. He later transitioned to Whitten Middle School, where his coaching career took off, leading teams in football, boys’ basketball, and boys’ track.
For the past 13 years, Houston has been a cornerstone of Lanier High School, serving as both a science teacher and athletics coach. During his tenure, he earned his Master of Arts in Teaching from Belhaven University.
"I see my younger self in these scholars every day, and I have a natural passion to help them succeed—both in life and in the classroom," said Houston. "I often tell my scholars: Prove the doubters wrong. When someone tells you what you can't do, show them what you can do."
Dr. Stacy Bailey, Principal of Lanier High School, praised Houston’s holistic approach to education. "Coach Houston is well-rounded. He checks on the students' social and emotional well-being. He’s not just focused on academics—he ensures our students grow into good, productive citizens," said Dr. Bailey.
In addition to his work at Lanier, Houston dedicates his summers to teaching at the Henley-Young Detention Center, helping students stay on track academically and providing positive mentorship.
Reflecting on his journey, Houston shared, "I was once one of these kids. That’s why I pour so much into them—because I know firsthand how much it matters."
