February 25, 2025 – Jackson Public Schools (JPS) has launched an exciting new partnership with the Jackson Zoo, aimed at enriching scholars’ wildlife education, fostering environmental stewardship, and increasing volunteer and career opportunities. The initiative, known as the Animal Adoption Pilot Program, officially kicked off with a special Zoo Pep-Rally held on February 3, 2025.
The program provides scholars with unique learning experiences beyond the classroom, allowing them to engage with wildlife and conservation efforts firsthand.
To mark the beginning of this collaboration, JPS and the Jackson Zoo hosted a ribbon-cutting ceremony, followed by keeper chat sessions where students had the opportunity to learn about different species from expert zookeepers.
Through this partnership, each participating school has adopted an animal, symbolizing their commitment to wildlife conservation and education. The schools and their adopted animals are:
-
Callaway High School – American Cougar
-
Forest Hill High School – Chimpanzee
-
Jim Hill High School – Sumatran Tiger
-
Lanier High School – Asiatic Black Bear
-
Murrah High School – Grevy’s Zebra
-
Provine High School – White Rhinoceros
-
JTECHS - Flamingos
-
Jackson Middle College – Ostrich
Each school’s adoption serves as an educational tool, encouraging scholars to take an active role in conservation efforts. The initiative aligns perfectly with the District's educational philosophy, promoting real-life encounters with animals and nature while expanding the curriculum beyond textbooks.
“Our partnership with the Jackson Zoo provides scholars with an invaluable opportunity to explore wildlife education in a hands-on environment,” said Denavia Bell, JPS High School Network Science Instructional Coach. “By adopting animals, participating in educational field trips, and engaging in volunteer opportunities, our scholars will develop a deeper appreciation for nature and conservation.”
Dozens of scholars from each high school attended the Zoo Pep-Rally, showing their school spirit by wearing their school colors or t-shirts. This initiative is expected to pave the way for further collaborations between JPS and the Jackson Zoo, ensuring students gain meaningful experiences that extend beyond the classroom.
