
During the month of March, as we celebrate Women’s History Month, Jackson Public Schools proudly honors Alyce Clarke, a trailblazer whose legacy of leadership and service has made a lasting impact on our city and state.
Representative Clarke made history as the first African American woman elected to the Mississippi Legislature, breaking barriers and opening doors for future generations of women in public service. Throughout her distinguished tenure in the Mississippi House of Representatives, she was a tireless advocate for education, healthcare, and civil rights.
Her most significant accomplishments include:
- Championing legislation that expanded opportunities for women- and minority-owned businesses
- Advocating for improved access to healthcare and support services for families
- Promoting equity in education and resources for public schools
- Contributing to the establishment of the Mississippi Lottery Corporation, supporting efforts to generate revenue for infrastructure and education
- Serving as a consistent voice for underserved communities across Mississippi
- Inspiring civic engagement and leadership among young people, especially young women
