This week, Jackson Public Schools proudly joins schools and communities across the nation in celebrating National GEAR UP Week, a time dedicated to highlighting the transformative impact of the Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs (GEAR UP). As we celebrate our GEAR UP scholars at Blackburn Middle School, Brinkley Middle School, Cardozo Middle School, Kirksey Middle School, Lanier Junior/Senior High School, and Peeples Middle School, we recognize the importance of providing students with the support, resources, and opportunities needed to achieve their college and career aspirations. National GEAR UP Week serves as an opportunity to showcase the positive impact GEAR UP is making in our schools and communities while celebrating the bright futures of the scholars we serve. GEAR UP Week 2026, observed September 21-25, carries the theme "Lighting the Way," recognizing how GEAR UP helps students discover, prepare for, and achieve their postsecondary goals
At Jackson Public Schools, we are excited to celebrate our GEAR UP scholars and the incredible opportunities being created to support their academic success, college readiness, career exploration, and future aspirations.
What is GEAR UP?
GEAR UP (Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs) is a federally funded initiative designed to increase the number of low-income students who are prepared to enter and succeed in postsecondary education. Jackson Public Schools was awarded a $10 million, seven-year partnership grant through the U.S. Department of Education to provide early intervention and comprehensive support services that prepare students for college and career success.
How Does GEAR UP Support Our Scholars?
Through GEAR UP, Jackson Public Schools is providing scholars with access to experiences, resources, and opportunities that help them envision and achieve their future goals. The program supports students through:
- College and Career Readiness Activities that help scholars explore careers, colleges, and postsecondary options.
- Academic Enrichment and Support designed to improve academic performance and prepare students for rigorous coursework.
- STEM Learning Opportunities and hands-on experiences through partnerships with colleges, universities, and community organizations.
- College Visits and Workforce Exposure that broaden students' understanding of educational and career pathways.
- Financial Literacy and FAFSA Awareness to help students and families prepare for the financial aspects of higher education.
- Family Engagement Opportunities that equip families to support their students' educational journeys.
-
Mentoring, Advising, and Coaching that encourage students to stay focused on their academic and career goals.
Building a Brighter Future
Jackson Public Schools' GEAR UP initiative currently serves middle school scholars and will continue supporting them throughout their educational journey. Through strategic partnerships with institutions such as Jackson State University, Hinds Community College, Tougaloo College, Lobaki, the Mississippi Museum of Art, the Mississippi Department of Archives and History, and other community organizations, scholars gain access to unique learning experiences that foster college and career readiness rating the hard work, determination, and potential of our scholars. We also recognize the dedication of our educators, families, partners, and community members who help make these opportunities possible.
Together, we are ensuring that every scholar has the knowledge, support, and confidence needed to pursue their dreams and succeed in college, careers, and life.
