Mrs. LaShunna McInnis, Principal

A native of Jackson, Mississippi, LaShunna McInnis matriculated through Jackson Public Schools and in 1989 graduated with honors from John W. Provine High School.  She furthered her educational career at Mississippi Valley State University and again graduated with honors in 1993, receiving a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science, Pre-Law.  She received her Master of Arts in Teaching English from Jackson State University and an Educational Specialist in Administrative Leadership from Walden University. She is currently pursuing an Educational Doctorate in Educational Leadership from the University of Southern Mississippi.

Mrs. McInnis has served as head principal of Powell Middle School since 2019. Before joining the Powell family, Mrs. McInnis worked as an assistant principal at Peeples Middle School, and a Subject Area Supervisor with the JPS Curriculum Department.  Prior to that, she taught English for 15 years at her high school alma mater, Provine. In her 29 years of service in education, she prides herself on the relationships she has built with students, parents, and fellow educators to improve educational opportunities for students. 

As an active community member, Mrs. McInnis is a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, Ist Vice President of the National Alumni Association of Mississippi Valley State University, a leader in Girl Scout Troop 5022, founding director of The Metro Jackson Pan-Hellenic Chorale, and a member of the Mississippi Mass Choir.

Mrs. McInnis attends Anderson United Methodist Church where she serves as a Sunday School teacher, Praise Team member, and founder and former director of the Anderson Youth Choir. 

She is married to Christopher McInnis and they have five children: Kayla, Elawrence, Christopher, Ian and Nykendra.
