Lester is one of 38 elementary schools in the Jackson Public School District. It serves students in grades K-5.
The Lester team of staff, students, parents and the community creates an environment of acceptance, excitement in learning, and mutual respect. We believe every child has a desire to learn and will succeed. The students at Lester have set goals for themselves so that they will become tomorrow's leaders. We expect the best here at Lester Elementary School, where "We Enter to Learn, and Leave to Achieve."
Lester Elementary is named after Laura Rebecca Lester born August 5, 1889, in Jackson, Mississippi. She began her teaching career in the early 1900's, starting with second and third grade at Poindexter. She then taught at George and return to Poindexter. When she returned to George in 1918, she served as principal until 1922. Ms. Lester returned to Poindexter to head the school as principal until her death, May 12, 1944.
Ms. Lester was a faithful member of Capitol Street Methodist Church where she was superintendent of the junior department in Sunday School. She was a charter member of the Board of Christian Education of her church. She was actively involved in the Mothers' Club, later called the Parent-Teacher Association. She was a charter member of the state charter of Delta Gamma and as the fist president of the Jackson Education Association.
Our School Adopters and Partners
Our School adopters work with Lester Elementary staff and students throughout the year, and they are integral to our success. In addition, we are stronger because of our community partners. We give a big thanks to our adopters and partners for all they do to help us here at Lester Elementary School to become the very best.
