Title VI

Overview

Jackson Public Schools complies with all applicable federal and state civil rights laws, including Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. JPS is committed to maintaining an educational and working environment free from discrimination, harassment, and retaliation based on race, color, or national origin (including limited English proficiency).

How to File a Complaint

If you believe that JPS has failed to provide services or discriminated in another way on the basis of race, color, national origin (including limited English proficiency), disability, age, or sex, or has retaliated against you for engaging in a protected Civil Rights activity in its programs or activities, you can file a complaint by contacting our Civil Rights Coordinator.

You may first contact the Civil Rights Coordinator to discuss your concerns and seek an informal resolution. If the matter cannot be resolved informally, you may submit a formal written complaint.

A formal complaint must:

  • Be filed within 180 days of the alleged discriminatory action;
  • Include your name and contact information, or the name and contact information of your representative;
  • Describe what occurred and the nature of the alleged discrimination or retaliation;
  • Include the date or dates of the alleged action, event, or occurrence;
  • Identify the remedy or resolution you are requesting; and
  • Be signed by you or your representative.

Complaint forms may be requested from the Civil Rights Coordinator. If you are unable to submit a written complaint or need assistance because of a disability or limited English proficiency, please contact the Civil Rights Coordinator. JPS will provide reasonable accommodations to ensure full access to the complaint-filing and investigation process.

JPS prohibits intimidation or retaliation against any person for filing a complaint, participating in an investigation, or exercising rights protected under Title VI. Filing a complaint through the District’s grievance process does not prevent a person from filing a complaint with the appropriate federal agency.
