    Description of the Course

    Each week consists of a new vocabulary theme and grammar concept, numerous interactive games reinforcing vocabulary and grammar, reading and listening comprehension activities, speaking and writing activities, and multimedia cultural presentations covering major Spanish-speaking areas in Europe and the Americas. The course has been carefully aligned to national standards as set forth by ACTFL (the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages) and the Mississippi World Language Guide. We will be preparing for the National Spanish Exam Level 1 to be taken in March or April 2024.

    Course length: 1 Year   4 sets of 9 Weeks   

    ******* 8th grade students who make a grade of “A” in the course can get 1 credit for high school Spanish.*******

    Overall Course Objectives

     This course will help you:

    ♣ Master common vocabulary terms and phrases

    ♣ Comprehend grammar patterns

    ♣ Start and participate in simple conversations, and respond appropriately to basic conversational prompts

    ♣ Generate language using basic vocabulary and a limited range of grammar patterns

    ♣ Read, write, speak, and listen for meaning in basic Spanish

    ♣ Regularly assess progress in proficiency through quizzes, tests, and speaking/writing submissions


    Every two weeks: Every two weeks, there will be a test with new vocabulary and grammar.

    Daily:  Each day, you will complete a lesson that is 90 minutes long that includes reading, writing, listening, and speaking in Spanish. All assignments will be submitted using Google Classroom/Canvas. You will need a device to submit your assignments. Daily Exit Tickets are required at the end of each class.

    Submitting Assignments: Complete your daily and weekly activities in class using Google Classroom/Canvas or provided paper copies.  Record your grades on the Assignment Sheet.



    To be counted present, you must arrive to class on time. You must bring your 3-ring binder| orange spiral notebook| charged laptop| and pencils daily. Your must record your assessment grades daily.

    Participation and Engagements (5)*

    You must engage in verbal feedback 5 times during each class. Your five engagements will be recorded during each class. Engagements can include:

    • Lead a review at the beginning of class
    • Read the objective and explain the connect to previous learning
    • Answer a question
    • Read aloud
    • Explain why an answer is right/wrong

    You must log into the Google Classroom/Canvas using your first and last name and complete class assignments during class time.  You will also use Duolingo Spanish to practice assignments. You must complete your daily Exit Tickets|  Pre-tests| Tests| Unit Tests.

    National Spanish Exam

    The National Spanish Examinations are standards-based assessments which evaluate both content standards (what a student knows) and performance standards (what a student is able to do) over various levels of secondary instruction (grades 6-12). Cardozo Middle School students who are enrolled in Spanish will all take the Level 1 exam in March or April 2024 with the opportunity to earn special recognitions and awards.

    Grading: Cardozo Middle School scholars are proficient at 80% or above. Scholars are encouraged to secure 80% or high mastery each week.
