School Registration

  • Jackson Public Schools uses Online Student Registration (OSR) powered by Central Access Corporation. OSR is a user-friendly module that allows parents/legal guardians to register and update student information using the ActiveParent Portal. Registering using OSR is a secure process that allows the District to verify all demographic, emergency and medical information for each student prior to the start of the new school year.

    Registration Information

    The documents in the lists below are required at the time of registration.

    Proofs of Residency

    The parent/legal guardian of a student seeking to enroll in a school shall provide the school district with at least two proofs of residency. The documents must be in the name of the adult enrolling the student. Examples of acceptable documents are included below. Only one document from each required group (I & II) will be accepted. See Section II of the JPS Enrollment Procedures (PDF) for details.

    Group I Group II
    1. Mortgage Documents/Property Deed
    2. Filed Homestead Application
    3. Lease/Rental Agreement** – (Enrolling parent must be listed as occupants.)
    1. Light Utility* – Entergy
    2. Gas Utility* – Atmos
    3. Water/Sewer Utility* – Jackson Water & Sewer
    4. D.L./State I.D – (Government identification with current residential address.)
    5. Voter’s Registration Card

    * All utility bills must be within the last 30 days.
    ** Lease/Rental Agreement must be within the current year or shows month-to-month stipulation after the expiration year.

    Jackson Public Schools is asking all parents/legal guardians to secure these documents so that they are readily available at the time of registration. It is the District’s aim for students to start school on the first day.

    New Students

    1. Valid government-issued photo ID. (No copies will be accepted.)
    2. Certified copy of the student’s long-form birth certificate.
    3. Report card and/or official withdrawal form from the previous school
    4. Updated State of Mississippi Certificate of Immunization Compliance (Form 121) or Certificate of Medical Exemption (Form 122).

    Returning Students

    1. Valid government-issued photo ID. (No copies will be accepted.)

    Types of Enrollment/Registration

    Please review the following types of enrollment for registration:

    I. Traditional Enrollment

    This enrollment refers to parents/legal guardians who reside at their own residence from one day to the next and can provide valid proof of their residence. This enrollment occurs online in the ActiveParent Portal.

    Parents/legal guardians should adhere to the following to complete the registration process for Traditional Enrollment:

    1. New Students – For new to the District students, parents/legal guardians must make an initial visit to the school in their attendance zone (with all appropriate documents) to begin the online registration process.  Parents/legal guardians will complete the online registration form using their ActiveParent account that will be created by the school official, after receiving an Active Code for registration. 
    2. Returning Students – For returning students, parents/legal guardians will complete the online registration process by using the username and password to their ActiveParent account. Parents/legal guardians should note the following:
      1. If parents/legal guardians do not remember the username and password to ActiveParent, they may contact their child’s school for assistance.
      2. Parents/legal guardians should upload proofs of residency documents during the online process.
      3. Parents/legal guardians, who are unable to complete online registration, may complete registration at their child’s school on Tuesdays and Thursdays of each week.  Computers are available for parents/legal guardians to use for the online portion of the registration process.
      4. Registration hours at the schools will be from 9 a.m.–3 p.m. Parents/legal guardians must arrive by 2:45 p.m. for this process. Extended hours for registration will occur on Thursdays of each week until 6 p.m. Parents/legal guardians must arrive no later than 5:45 p.m.
      5. Parents/legal guardians must contact their child’s school to schedule an appointment to complete registration.

    II. Shared Residency Enrollment

    This enrollment refers to parents/legal guardians who consistently reside with someone else from one day to the next. Parents/legal guardians who are enrolling under Shared Residency Affidavit status will visit the Office of Enrollment Services located at 1017 Robinson Street, Jackson, MS 39203 to receive affidavit approval and next steps toward completion.  Parents/legal guardians must contact the Office of Enrollment Services at (601) 960-8850 for an appointment to receive approval for the Shared Residency Affidavit.

    Parents/legal guardians will follow the requirements listed below:

    1. The enrolling parent along with the homeowner/primary resident shall complete a Shared Residency Affidavit (PDF) with all required information and must get the affidavit notarized by an authorized notary.
    2. The Shared Residency Affidavit has space for only two children’s names to be recorded. If there are more than two children, please complete additional forms until all names have been captured on an affidavit. Each affidavit form will have to be notarized.   
    3. The primary homeowner shall provide two proofs of residency from the required group categories below. You may print the Item Requirements Checklist (PDF).

    1. The enrolling parent/legal guardian must submit at least one proof of residency that displays the address of the homeowner/primary resident. The proof of residency must be one of the following: 
      1. Driver's license (with current address).
      2. State ID (Government-issued with current residential address).
      3. Voter's Registration Card.
      4. Federal immigration documents.
    2. The enrolling parent/legal guardian along with the primary homeowner must complete and sign a Notification of Penalties Form (PDF) to be submitted together with the notarized affidavit for the review and approval process.
    3. The enrolling parent/legal guardian must provide the following when arriving for approval for the shared residency affidavit:
      1. Completed and signed Notification of Penalties Form (PDF) signed by the homeowner and enrolling parent.
      2. Notarized Shared Residency Affidavit.
      3. Two required proofs of residency for the homeowner.
      4. One required proof of residency for the enrolling parent.

    Once approved, parents/legal guardians shall report to their child’s school to present the Shared Residency Affidavit Approval Notice attached to required residency documents to the school official to finalize registration. 

    The Affidavit of Shared Residency is only valid for one school year. However, if the parent or legal guardian withdraws his or her child to attend another school within the district and can substantiate that he or she is residing at a new shared residence, a new affidavit of shared residency must be completed to be filed at the district office.

    III. Non-Parental Enrollment

    This enrollment refers to custodians who are the present caregivers of a child, other than a parent or legal guardian of the child. This enrollment type is reviewed and approved by district personnel taking into account the unique circumstances that would require this kind of enrollment. This enrollment will occur at the Office of Enrollment Services & Records located at 1017 Robinson Street, Jackson, MS 39203.

    Parents/legal guardians who are enrolling under Non-Parental Affidavit status will complete the registration at the Office of Enrollment Services located at 1017 Robinson Street.

    The Non-Parental Affidavit is reviewed and approved by district personnel taking into account the unique circumstances, as noted below, that would require this

However, parents/legal guardians must contact the Office of Enrollment Services at (601) 960-8850 to receive approval for an affidavit.

    The Non-Parental Affidavit is only considered based on the following:

    1. Parent/legal guardian is incarcerated.
    2. Parent/legal guardian is deployed.
    3. Parent/legal guardian abandoned child.
    4. Parent/legal guardian is deceased, guardianship not yet established.

    The Non-Parental Affidavit is only valid for one school year, and approvals are granted on a case-by-case basis each year.

    In-District Transfer Requests

    In-District Transfer Requests will be reviewed prior to the start of school. Parents/legal guardians may request an In-District Transfer during the completion of the online registration process in ActiveParent.  

    Note: 

    • To ensure that all In-District Transfer Requests are reviewed in a timely manner and to ensure that all students are able to start school on day one, the deadline for in-district transfers is July 15, 2020.

    District-to-District Transfer Requests

    Submit your request for District-to-District transfer using the JPS District-to-District Transfer Request Form (PDF). Specific procedures for this process are included in the JPS Pupil Registration Procedures.     Notes:

    • All incoming seventh-graders for the 2020–2021 school year must have their Tdap vaccination before registration can be completed.
    • Kindergartners must be five years old on or before September 1.
    • First graders must be six years old on or before September 1.
    • For pre-K student enrollment, please contact the Pre-K office at (601) 960-4002.
    • Uniforms—JPS students in pre-K through eighth grade are required to wear uniforms. See the Student Uniforms Page for details.
