MISSION STATEMENT
The mission of the Blackburn Middle School Library Media Center is to support, enhance, and provide a rich diversity of materials and resources that will meet the informational and instructional needs of the staff and students; and assist the learning community in becoming effective and proficient users of information.
VISION
Blackburn Middle School Library Media Specialist's vision for the library media center is to provide a stimulating, motivating, and exciting warm environment for staff and students to:
- have available materials and resources that will supplement the curriculum.
- promote reading through library activities and reading programs.
- have everyone reading during the Accelerated Reader (AR) specified reading time.
- connect with the world beyond the school's wall.
- provide more in-services for staff and students.
Location
The library is located on the second floor at the top to of the stairs near the main office.

7:30 a.m. until 3:30 p.m.
Friday
7:30 a.m. until 3:00 p.m.

Extended library hours are available upon request.

Award Winning Books
Awards are given to children’s books every year. Some of these awards are listed below. Click on the award name to find out more information and a list of winners for this current and previous years.
Newbery Medal Award
The Newbery Medal is awarded each year to the author with the greatest contribution to children’s literature. The award was named for John Newbery, the first publisher of children’s periodicals.
Caldecott Medal Award
The Caldecott Medal is awarded each year to the illustrator of the most outstanding picture book. The award was named for Randolph Caldecott, a distinguished English illustrator.
Coretta Scott King Award
This award is awarded each year to a black author and illustrator whose works promote world unity and peace. This award honors Mrs. King for her determination and courage.

EBSCOhost - supplies a powerful, online reference system offering a variety of full text magazines, journals, and pamphlets from leading information providers.
Grolier Products - includes several online encyclopedias.
SIRS Discoverer - provides an interactive reference tool for elementary and middle school students.
SIRS Researchers - contains articles from 1,500 domestic and international newspapers, magazines, journals, and US government publications.
Gale Products - includes literary resources such as Contemporary Authors and EXPLORING Poetry, as well as business reference materials.
Wilson Biographies - contains the full text of the biographies from more than 100 print volumes of biographical reference books.
FirstSearch - provides instant access to full text from over 7,500 journals and over 3,100 full-image online journals.
NOTE: Students may also access MAGNOLIA from their homes by securing a password from the librarian.
