JPS Rezoning Updates
Jackson Public Schools announced its first comprehensive rezoning plan on April 30, 2012. The Jackson Public Schools Board of Trustees approved the plan and the hiring of Eric Stringfellow to serve as communications consultant for the plan. The plan will result in the closing of one elementary school and a new mission for one high school. Special programs, like APAC, IB, and Montessori, will also be consolidated.
Rationale for rezoning:
- To consolidate special program sites to ensure uniform standards, improve
student learning, and save costs
- To create neighborhood schools for children by eliminating subzones established
in the 1980s during desegregation
- To provide equity in classroom size
- To make the district more efficient, be a good steward of tax dollars,
and eliminate the possible need for teacher lay-offs
- To better accommodate population shifts, especially into south Jackson
