Provine High School hosted parents and students the evening of January 12, 2012, for Success Night. The event was held to promote the school's mission and vision and to share with parents a plan to ensure the success of every student at Provine High School.
"Our attempt was to create a true collaboration between school, home, and community; and emphasize the importance of all three working together for the benefit of the students," said Principal Laketia Marshall-Thomas.
The general session included an address by Senator John Horhn who challenged parents to be actively involved in the school-home-community collaboration. He stressed the importance of parents being engaged in the education of their high school child, and called on each partner to encourage students to stay in school, attend school every day, and graduate in four years. Program presenters Ellen Axtell of Jackson Public Schools and Peggy Orey of Gear Up Mississippi further emphasized strategies and programs available for ensuring students' success.
Parents were able to attend breakout sessions on a variety of topics, including success in the tested subject areas – English II, Algebra I, US History, and Biology I. Each session was designed to provide information and resources for parents to help students prepare for the rigors of the tests. Parents received hands-on experience with resources such as USA Test Prep, Study Island, and Textbook Online. They also learned how to monitor their students' progress using SchoolNet, an instructional management suite. Provine teachers facilitated the parent workshops.
Participating students were empowered to map out a course for graduation. Along with their report cards, the students were supplied with copies of their transcripts and a graduation checklist. Seniors and their parents received information on graduation activities planned for the remaining months of the school year.
