Limited Service Teaching Positions

The Jackson Public School District has three different types of limited service teaching positions:

  1. Long-term substitute
The principal needs to fill a slot currently held by someone on his/her staff who will be absent for an extended period due to maternity, surgery, etc.
  2. Certified applicant not available
The principal has not been able to hire a suitable certified applicant for a vacant slot on the school staff. The principal will usually recommend a substitute teacher whose work habits and skills are well known to him/her. Occasionally, a principal will recommend, for limited service, an individual whose certification is incomplete for a variety of reasons – awaiting test scores, emergency certificate request processing, etc.
  3. Retired teacher in vacancy position
The principal hires a retired teacher to fill a vacant slot on his staff for a portion of the year. The limitations of the retirement system will not allow the retiree to work the entire year.

Generally, limited service teachers who do not hold state certificates are paid at the rate of $85 a day once they have been in a single position for a period of twenty days. Certified retired teachers are paid at a per diem rate that would equal what they would earn if they were under contract when they work for a period of twenty consecutive days or more.
